THE IMPORTANCE OF THE CHAPLAIN IN THE BRAZILIAN ARMY

Abstract

This article aims to investigate the relevance of the military chaplain in the Brazilian Army, highlighting its historical and current role. Military chaplaincy dates back to the arrival of the Portuguese in 1500, when the first Catholic priests disembarked in Brazil with Pedro Álvares Cabral. Over the centuries, chaplaincy became consolidated, offering spiritual and emotional support to soldiers and their families. Both Catholic and Protestant chaplains have played crucial roles throughout Brazilian military history. During World War II, the work of Chaplain Frei Orlando was particularly notable, and he was posthumously recognized as the patron of the Brazilian Army’s Religious Assistance Service. This paper also explores the inclusion of Protestant chaplains, such as Pastor João Filson Soren, who provided religious support during the war, serving as a spiritual leader for evangelical soldiers. The spiritual assistance offered by chaplains not only strengthens the troops’ morale but also provides emotional balance, which is crucial for military performance in peacetime and combat. The article uses interviews with Brazilian Army chaplains, as well as historical sources and statistics, to demonstrate that military chaplaincy is an essential component in the structure of the Armed Forces, promoting cohesion and the well-being of the military. In conclusion, chaplaincy continues to be vital in consolidating and strengthening the Brazilian Army.
